New report outlines path for federal government to reduce oilsands impacts

All federal leaders say more must be done; report outlines Ottawa’s duties under existing federal laws

OTTAWA, ON — Three of Canada's leading environmental organizations released a new report today detailing how federal laws should be enforced to reduce the negative environmental and economic impacts of oilsands activity. The report follows the federal government's recent acknowledgement, in striking a panel to review pollution in the Athabasca River, of the need for Ottawa to play a greater role in the oilsands. Thousands of industrial incidents raise serious concerns about toxic oil industry

Greenpeace Canada, Sierra Club Prairie, Keepers of the Athabasca and Global Forest Watch Canada today released two databases compiled by prominent scientist Dr. Kevin Timoney, one with more than 6,500 incidents, regarding tar sands operations that raise serious concerns about how the Alberta government allows oil companies to operate in this province. In 2008 the Confined Feeding Operations (CFO) Project Team developed 10 recommendations to improve the management of air emissions from existing and future CFOs in Alberta, and to improve relationships between stakeholders.

Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD) has led the implementation of these recommendations. ARD has requested that a multi-stakeholder implementation team be established to serve as a liaison between the CASA board, the CFO recommendation implementers, and the former CFO project team. The Clean Air Strategic Alliance (CASA) has offered to sponsor up to 4 ENGOs to attend  the Introduction to Consensus Decision Making course on March 4 and 5 in Edmonton, part of the Alberta Arbitration & Mediation Society's certificate program is dispute resolution.  This course provides learners with a comprehensive introductory overview of consensus decision making process and the certificate program. Dear Colleagues:

As you may be aware, a board committee of the Clean Air Strategic Alliance (CASA) has been working to clarify the relationships among the airsheds, the Alberta Airshed Council, and CASA as they pertain to the communications, information sharing, and air quality management responsibilities.

The Airshed Zones Board Committee (AZBC) is finalizing its recommendations to the CASA board. A draft of the AZBC report has previously been circulated to Clean Air Energy Caucus members by AZBC ENGO member, Bob Cameron (February 4th).
