“A broad and transparent consultation process will provide valuable input as the province seeks to develop a credible climate strategy that reflects the priorities and concerns of Albertans.

Canada lacks comprehensive strategy to support its growing clean energy sector: report
Without coordinated effort federally and provincially, Canada could lose a significant share of the global market for its clean energy technology
VANCOUVER — A new report examining policies and programs that support growth and development of companies in the clean technology (cleantech) sector has uncovered significant shortcomings in Canada’s approach, and a lack of a clear policy framework federally and provincially.
The policy “report card” — authored by the Pembina Institute and commissioned by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) — examined three types of policy categories: those that support domestic deployment opportunities, those that encourage business growth and those that help companies access export opportunities. SESA Seminar: Net Zero Energy - Ready For Prime Time?
Peter Amerongen, Habitat Studios
Free admission and refreshments - come early for good seating.
After years of pioneering and experimentation Net Zero Energy housing is ready for prime time. National Resources Canada’s R2000 Net Zero Energy Pilot is intended to demonstrate road ready solutions that will work anywhere in Canada, on any site, with readily available products and materials. Detailed tracking of these houses will also be used to support the development of a new Net Zero Energy certification being developed in conjunction with Canada’s new improved Energuide Rating System. Of the 13 projects across Canada, Habitat Studio’s McKernan project in Edmonton will be most northerly and the first completed.
Veteran net zero energy builder, Peter Amerongen, will discuss the solutions that will be part of our carbon neutral future: An optimized blend of integrated design, near Passive House levels of conservation, heat pumps and renewable energy generation. Besides discussing the rational and implications of these measures, he will also present examples of their being applied to larger buildings. Phasing Out Coal — A Healthy Decision
Coal-fired plants make people sick and die, particularly children and those with chronic illnesses, and they cost society huge amounts of money desperately needed for other purposes.
—Dr Alan Lockwood, MD, The Silent Epidemic, MIT, 2012
The majority of Alberta's electricity is generated by coal fired plants (Alberta Energy, 2012). The research is now clear that burning coal comes with substantial human health costs. In Alberta alone coal contributes to over 100 fatalities and more than 4,000 asthma symptom days every year (Alberta study here). What are the impacts of coal on human health? How can Alberta include health issues related to burning coal in its energy strategy? Read more about Phasing Out Coal — A Healthy Decision
