Pembina reacts to Auditor General’s plan to review pipeline safety

CALGARY — Jennifer Grant, director of the Pembina Institute’s oilsands program, made the following comments in response to Auditor General Merwan Saher's commitment to undertake an audit of pipeline safety:

"It's very positive to see the Auditor General committing to audit Alberta's pipeline monitoring systems and ensure they comply with regulations, and we applaud Mr. Saher for showing leadership on this important issue.

On behalf of Environment Canada (EC) and Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development (ESRD), I would like to invite up to three representatives from the Alberta Environmental Network to participate on each of the Component Advisory Committees (Air, Water, Biodiversity, and Wildlife Contaminants and Toxicology).  The Component Advisory Committees support the Joint Canada-Alberta Implementation Plan for Oil Sands Monitoring (“the Implementation Plan”). Pembina Institute takes province to court over right to speak at oilsands hearings

Government documents show precedent of province blocking Pembina’s participation in oilsands hearings because of critical analysis of government policies

EDMONTON — The Pembina Institute was in court today appealing a Government of Alberta decision not to allow the energy policy think tank to participate in the regulatory review of a proposed in situ oilsands project, arguing the government broke provincial rules for public participation in the review of energy projects. Tar Sands Healing Walk

The Healing Walk started in 2010 in Fort McMurray Alberta, which is located in the Northern Boreal Forest. Fort McMurray is in Treaty 8 where for the past 50 years there has been oil extraction. Initially the extraction was oil, it is now crude which is a much heavier form of oil and takes more energy and water to extract, making it one if the dirtiest oils on the planet.
