Marcus McCabe, director of Hempire Building Materials is an accomplished scientist, plasterer, hemp-lime builder, straw bale builder and Permaculturalist who has been researching experimental building materials since the early nineties. He is going to be in Calgary this month speaking at an information/ Q&A evening for both public and industry interested in sustainable building technologies for both residential and commercial applications.

RePower Alberta Launches Across the Province

Building the Green Economy

Sierra Club Prairie and Greenpeace Canada have launched the Province-wide green tour, ‘RePower Alberta: Building the Green Economy’, and will see leaders in various sectors of the green jobs economy talking about the growing economic and community benefits of moving to a green economy and how to start laying the stepping stones in getting there.

The tour already has confirmed dates in Peace River, Manning, Fort Saskatchewan, Edmonton, Slave Lake and Red Deer with additional tour dates being planned throughout the summer.

RePower Alberta is calling on the Alberta Government to implement a Green Energy Strategy. After decades of riding the roller-coaster of the fossil fuel sectors’ boom and bust cycles, the time has come for Alberta to forge a new energy path. Getting as close as possible to Net Zero Energy here on the northern prairies can be a daunting and expensive challenge. With our cold weather and long winter nights it requires a careful blend of conservation in all its forms, passive and active solar collection, as well as solar electricity.

Having worked through the obstacles to net zero energy for three successful projects to date Peter Amerongen, of Habitat Studio and Workshop Ltd, has begun to identify a logical series of steps for designing for maximum net energy reduction at the lowest incremental cost.
