The Great Thistle Pull, Part 3

What: Volunteers will join the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) for its third annual Thistle pull on one of NCC’s beautiful properties at the Clifford E. Lee Nature Sanctuary near Edmonton. Volunteers will be taken on a guided hike through its marshlands, open meadows, aspen parkland and pine forest, and then contribute to site improvement by pulling invasive weed species including Canada Thistle in order to protect native plant diversity. Nature Conservancy of Canada Knapweed Rodeo

What: Volunteers will join the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) for a day of invasive plant removal at NCC’s West property near Waterton Lakes National Park. Volunteers will round up some invasive Spotted Knapweed in order to protect the native plant diversity of this ecologically significant area. The Heart of the Crowsnest: Habitat Restoration at Fleming Ranch

What: Volunteers will join the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) for a day of exploration and habitat restoration on one of NCC’s scenic properties, Fleming Ranch. Volunteers will be taken on a guided hike through wetlands and woodlands, and then contribute to site improvement by taking down barbed wire fences, installing Bluebird boxes and bat houses, and pulling weeds such as Spotted Knapweed along the Crowsnest River. Volunteers will pull weeds including Canada Thistle in order to protect the native plant diversity of this ecologically significant area. In addition to enhancing its habitat, volunteers will enjoy a guided tour of this scenic property.

  1. Staples Switches to Recycled, Sustainable Paper for Customer Copying, Printing
    The office supplies giant announced this week it will start using 50 percent post-consumer recycled content paper certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) for black and white copy and print jobs.
  2. Launches ‘Do Not Mail’ Campaign to Stop Junk Mail
    The production of the 100 billion pieces of junk mail that Americans annually receive requires more than 100 million trees, while producing as much global warming emissions as 3.7 million cars. Moreover, this deforestation is occurring in forests that play vital roles in the fight against climate change: the Canadian Boreal and Indonesian Tropical Forest.
  3. Socially Responsible Investment Firm Calvert Commits to Boreal Protection
    One of the largest socially and environmentally responsible mutual fund companies in the U.S. announced today they will fully support the protection of Canada’s Boreal Forest by adopting the Boreal Forest Conservation Framework (the Framework) and joining the Boreal Leadership Council.
