Alberta Environment and Parks is seeking input from the public and stakeholders on the proposed reclassification and expansion of the Twin River Heritage Rangeland Natural Area (Twin River HRNA). Twin River HRNA is located in southern Alberta, approximately 10 km west of the Town of Milk River and currently protects over 19,000 hectares (47,000 acres) of grassland within the Milk River Ridge.  Read More

Yesterday, the Alberta government released a proposal to expand the Twin River Heritage Rangeland Natural Area in order to protect a significant piece of Alberta’s endangered grasslands. Alberta Wilderness Association (AWA) is relieved to finally see concrete steps towards protection of a critical piece of Alberta’s native grasslands, which has been on government books awaiting protection for years. AWA remains concerned about ongoing potential threats to this landscape from oil and gas exploration. Read More

CPAWS Northern Alberta will be travelling to Grande Prairie and Peace River to give presentations about the conservation of the headwaters from August 28th to August 30th.

CPAWS Northern Alberta will be giving a presentation on the conservation issues in the Grande Prairie area, on the importance of the headwaters of the Peace and Athabasca rivers, their role in climate change mitigation, and the impacts downstream that could occur if they are not protected! There will be music, drinks, hors d'oeuvres, entertainment, and a silent auction. This masquerade is in support of WILDNorth, Northern Alberta's centre for rescue and compassionate care of injured and orphaned wildlife.

Public Lands: The Next Target for Alberta’s Renewable Energy Land Rush?

Will the Government of Alberta allow industrial scale wind and solar farms on public lands? Since early June Alberta Wilderness Association (AWA) has posed this question several times to the provincial government. AWA is still waiting for an answer.

The dramatic expansion of big wind and big solar projects now underway must not take place at the expense of our threatened native grasslands, parklands, and foothills. AWA believes Alberta needs a public lands policy that explicitly addresses the renewable energy sector. Read More

AWA Hike: Sandhills and Horse Lake

A full day hike in the Ghost River Forest reserve west of Calgary.

After hiking through a partially cleared forest, the “Sandhills” are reached. They are a unique feature in the foothills ridges with some areas covered by bare sand only. Further beyond are extensive wetlands and a small lake in an area frequented by wild horses. Read More
