The lush meadows below the exposed ridge provide the canvas for many beautiful wildflowers, and provide habitat for Bighorn sheep, grizzly bears, elk and countless bird species such as yellow-rumped warblers and spruce grouse. Motorcycle Club Fined for Killing Threatened Fish

Brooks Motorcycle Club and its Vice President have been fined a total of $70,000 under the Species at Risk Act and the Fisheries Act for organizing a motocross race that crossed through North and South Racehorse Creeks several times, seriously harming and causing the death of young bull trout and threatened westslope cutthroat trout. Alberta Wilderness Association (AWA) applauds the decision for defending Alberta’s imperiled native trout and upholding the intent of the Species at Risk Act, as well as recognizing the damage that motorized use can have on fish habitat. New forest certification standard promises better protection for woodland caribou

Today, the Forest Stewardship Council of Canada (FSC Canada) released a new FSC Standard that will guide Canada’s forestry sector. FSC Canada aims to incorporate sustainability into responsible forest management. Alberta Wilderness Association (AWA) congratulates FSC for developing a progressive national standard that incorporates conservation measures for species at risk, including a habitat indicator for endangered woodland caribou. First established as a Natural Area in 1971, the Plateau Mountain Ecological Reserve is the southernmost tip of Kananaskis Country, and represents a geologically and biologically distinct mountain ecosystem within Alberta. The summit of Plateau Mountain provides spectacular views of the montane meadows filled with wildflowers, in addition to Eastern slopes to the west and the prairie to the east. Read More

AWA After Hours: Sketch the Solstice

This summer solstice, enjoy the late night sun with an evening of art and inspiration at Alberta Wilderness Association. Led by artist, Barbara Amos, we’ll be sketching Alberta’s grasslands while learning about their rich cultural and natural history.
