Comments on Water for Life Strategy renewal and the proposed Species at Risk Act Recovery Strategy for the Burrowing Owl

The Environmental Law Centre's (ELC) mission is to ensure that laws, policies, and legal processes protect the environment. In pursuit of this mission the ELC regularly provides comments and recommendations to government and administrative bodies in relation to law and policy development. At the request of Alberta Environment Minister Rob Renner, the Alberta Water Council - a multi-stakeholder, consensus-based organization representing all interests in water management and use in Alberta - is developing recommendations on the renewal of the provincial water strategy, Water of Life. The renewal is part of the Premier's Mandate letter to Minister Renner, and a priority for Government. Now Alberta Water Council is asking for your voice in the process. Read More

1. Drumheller says no to supplying water to the Balzac development

A controversial proposal to pipe water from the Red Deer to a development in the Bow River basin has run into a major stumbling block. On April 3, 2007, Town of Drumheller Council denied Municipal District of Rocky View's request to use Drumheller's water intake structure and works to withdraw water from the Red Deer River that would supply the United Horsemen's new development near Balzac, a few miles north of Calgary. The vote was unanimous.

1. Piping Water Between River Basins: A Growing Controversy

Despite its location in the Bow River basin, a development already under construction is seeking water from the Red Deer River. Without a plan for water supply, developers for United Horseman of Alberta are already constructing a racetrack and entertainment centre near the Hamlet of Balzac, Alberta. Plans were publicly announced in January 2006 and development began soon after assuming water supply approvals would soon follow. Read More

Act Now To Protect The Bow River And Protected Areas In The Bow Valley

All Albertans who care about protecting the Bow River, Bow Valley Provincial Park, Bow Valley Wildland Park, and other protected areas should contact the following politicians now and oppose the development of a new town proposed for the Horseshoe Lands on the banks of the Bow River at the entrance to the Rocky Mountains, or at the very least request that the Province require an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) before any development proposal is considered for this area.
