The cornerstone of sustainability is behavior change. If we are to move toward a sustainable future we must encourage individuals and businesses to engage in a multitude of actions (e.g., waste reduction, water and energy efficiency, pollution prevention, etc.). To date, most programs to encourage such activities have relied upon disseminating information. The Recycling Council of Alberta is pleased to announce its 2009 Waste Reduction Conference, to be held October 14-16, 2009, at the Fairmont Palliser Hotel in Calgary, Alberta. Please note that the date changed from previously published dates.

The conference will feature a wide variety of topics and sessions, and potential speakers are welcome to submit ideas for presentations on progressive waste reduction topics, including zero waste, effective education/promotion, and leading-edge technologies.

A wide choice of sponsorship opportunities to suit all budgets will also be available this year.

2008 Rs of Excellence Awards - Call for Nominations

Hurry - application deadline is August 15, 2008

The RCA is seeking nominations for its 2008 Rs of Excellence Awards.

If you know a person, program or organization that has made an outstanding contribution towards waste reduction, please let us know.

Application is simple - Submit a brief description of the nominee’s achievements and why you think they deserve an award. Considered criteria include:

  • Environmental impacts (i.e. quantified reductions in waste)
  • Innovation and progressiveness
  • Leadership
  • History and track record
  • Overall environmental commitment

Please include contact information for the nominee as well as yourself. Also include two letters of support with your nomination.

Stakeholder Consultations for Alberta's New Paint Stewardship Program

Alberta's paint recycling program will be implemented on April 1, 2008. The Alberta Recycling Management Authority has been delegated to manage this new program.

Municipal solid waste management and recycling staff are key stakeholders in the new stewardship program. Building on the original consultations by Alberta Environment on a paint stewardship program, Alberta Recycling is seeking your input before finalizing the program. Read More

Alberta Announces Long-Term Waste Strategy

As part of Waste Reduction Week, on Thursday, October 18 in Red Deer, Minister Rob Renner announced a new long-term waste strategy, which shares Waste Reduction Week's slogan "Too Good to Waste".
