Moratorium is Good First Step for Bow River Basin

The Government's announcement to stop issuing licenses for the Bow and Oldman Rivers is a necessary first step towards better management of water in the Bow River Basin. But we still have much work ahead to achieve the "sustainability" promised to us in Alberta's Water for Life strategy.

The fact is that we finished handing out the water long ago, and in recent years we have been reduced to handing out promises. In 2001 - a dry year - we had more water allocations than we did water. In the five years since, we have promised away more. Read More

1. Bow Valley Film Premiere and Presentation - May 25th - 7 pm

Bow Riverkeeper presents its film, Big Bow Float: Journey Down the Emerald Thread, along with a presentation about its new Awareness to Action campaign, part of the Coldwell Banker in the Community Series.

2. Bow Riverkeeper Calls for Moratorium on New Water Permits for Bow and Oldman Rivers

A Calgary Herald opinion-editorial published May 6 by Bow Riverkeeper Danielle Droitsch called on the Alberta government to place a moratorium on new water licenses for the Bow and Oldman River. In October 2005, a draft South Saskatchewan River Basin plan proposed a moratorium on new licenses for the Bow and Oldman Rivers. Bow Riverkeeper called on the Alberta government to adopt this long overdue plan and begin addressing the existing over allocation of these rivers in favour of sustainable water management and protection of aquatic ecosystems.
