Environmental Coalition Launches Suffield Video Days before Hearing

Calgary (October 2, 2008) - The high-profile hearing for EnCana's application for a large shallow gas project in the Suffield National Wildlife Area (NWA) will begin in Calgary on Monday, October 6. Today the Suffield Coalition - seven conservation groups opposing the application - launched a three-minute videhighlighting EnCana's poor environmental record in the area and pointing tthe danger tSuffield's rare grassland ecosystem. EnCana’s Ninth Appearance in Court on Wildlife Act Charges

Calgary (September 18, 2008) – With the hearing into EnCana’s application to drill 1,275 wells in the Suffield National Wildlife Area less than three weeks away, another related scenario continues to unfold. On September 18, EnCana appears in Medicine Hat Court for the ninth time on charges related to installing a section of pipeline in the National Wildlife Area without a permit. EnCana has pled not guilty, and during the September 18 appearance, a trial date is to be set. Read More

Oil Sands Industry Blocks New Wetland Protection Rules

A last-minute withdrawal by the oil sands industry from a negotiated agreement on wetlands has prompted calls from environmental groups that the Government of Alberta not give in to oil industry pressure, but rather deliver on overdue rules to protect and conserve wetlands across Alberta.

Two letters to the Alberta government, sent by the oil sands industry after they withdrew their approval for a broadly supported wetland policy, demonstrate the oil sands industry’s overt effort to pressure the Alberta government.

Alberta Wilderness Association, Pembina Institute, Sierra Club of Canada (Prairie Chapter), Southern Alberta Group for the Environment, South Peace Environment Association and Water Matters are calling on the Government of Alberta to proceed swiftly to implement a landmark wetland policy recommended today by the multi-stakeholder Alberta Water Council (AWC). EnCana Makes First Court Appearance after Being Charged with Violating Canada Wildlife Act

Calgary (December 5, 2007) – EnCana will make their first court appearance at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 6 in Medicine Hat Provincial Court in response to the charge of violating the Canada Wildlife Act in the Suffield National Wildlife Area (NWA). Canadians Subsidize Environmental Costs of Encana's Activities at Suffield

EnCana is destroying an environmentally significant area at fire sale prices and with lack of environmental oversight, charges a coalition of environmental groups. Encana Ignores CFB Suffield Rules and Damages Sensitive Wetlands at Suffield

Encana failed to follow the rules of Canadian Forces Base Suffield for protection of wetlands while drilling, a coalition of environmental groups has learned. The company drilled a well in a known wetland near the federally protected Suffield National Wildlife Area, and refused to remove it until given an ultimatum by the Base. The groups are asking the federal government to prohibit all new industrial activities in the Suffield National Wildlife Area. Read More
