Fortress Ski Hill Should Not Truck Mountain Water to Calgary

Fortress Mountain ski hill is proposing to remove 50 million liters per year of water flowing into Kananaskis’ Galatea Creek and truck it to a Calgary water bottling facility. Alberta Wilderness Association (AWA) strongly opposes this water use and calls on Fortress ski hill to withdraw its proposal.

Call for Delegate: Evaluating Water Conservation, Efficiency and Productivity Project Team, Alberta Water Council

Initiative:
Evaluating Water Conservation, Efficiency and Productivity Project Team
Position:
ENGO Sector Member
Application Deadline:
8 Mar 2016

Water conservation and major water-using sectors voluntarily developing and implementing water conservation, efficiency and productivity (CEP) plans are pillars of the Water for Life (WFL) strategy. Improving overall efficiency and productivity of water use by 30% from 2005 levels by 2015 was identified as an aspirational specific outcome in the original WFL strategy (2003), and was reaffirmed in the renewed WFL (2008) and associated action plan (2009).

Since 2004, the Alberta Water Council (AWC) has supported the CEP initiative with three project teams: the first identified guiding principles and definitions related to CEP planning; the second developed a framework to guide the sectors in creating their CEP plans; and the third supported the seven priority water-using sectors as they developed their plans. The third team also made a recommendation for a fourth team. This team would report on the implementation progress of sectors’ CEP plans, evaluate the overall CEP planning process, and make recommendations to enhance sector CEP planning, implementation and future reporting if needed.

Protecting Instream Flow in Alberta’s Rivers – Navigating Churning Policy Waters

Oct 17 2015 - 4:00pm to 6:00pm

The Faculty of Law and the Canadian Institute of Resources Law invite you to attend a free public lecture on Protecting Instream Flow in Alberta’s Rivers – Navigating Churning Policy Waters.

It is a simple truth that healthy aquatic ecosystems need sufficient water to meet instream flow needs. Yet the water in some Alberta’s rivers is fully or over-allocated to human uses which can impact and impair aquatic ecosystems. This lecture will describe why  we should be concerned about instream flow needs, especially in southern Alberta, explain what tools the Alberta Water Act provides to restore and protect instream flows, and set out the curbed use by the Government. The lecture will recount to date the ongoing and litigious saga of the non-profit Water Conservation Trust of Canada and its aim of utilizing the transfer and licensing provisions of the Water Act and the water market made possible by the Act to protect instream flows.
