Alberta Peace River Dam Project Cancelled By TransAlta

On January 16, TransAlta Corporation withdrew its application to the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) for a 9 year extension of the approved construction date of its Dunvegan Hydroelectric Project, citing substantial information requests from stakeholders, a potentially long and costly hearing process, and unfavourable project economics. Alberta Wilderness Association (AWA) welcomes the withdrawal of the 100 MW hydro power project as positive news for local residents and the Peace’s aquatic and river valley ecosystem. Phasing Out Coal — A Healthy Decision

Sep 30 2014 - 2:30pm to 5:30pm

Coal-fired plants make people sick and die, particularly children and those with chronic illnesses, and they cost society huge amounts of money desperately needed for other purposes.
—Dr Alan Lockwood, MD, The Silent Epidemic, MIT, 2012

The majority of Alberta's electricity is generated by coal fired plants (Alberta Energy, 2012). The research is now clear that burning coal comes with substantial human health costs. In Alberta alone coal contributes to over 100 fatalities and more than 4,000 asthma symptom days every year (Alberta study here). What are the impacts of coal on human health? How can Alberta include health issues related to burning coal in its energy strategy? Read more about Phasing Out Coal — A Healthy Decision
