RCA Newsflash "Albertans Challenged to Reduce Waste"

Waste Reduction Week has arrived!

The Recycling Council of Alberta (RCA) is leading the province-wide promotional and educational campaign for the 2007 national Waste Reduction Week (WRW) campaign, October 15 to 21, 2007. The purpose of the week is to encourage waste reduction and minimization initiatives at home, at school and in communities and businesses. Visit www.wrwcanada.com for information.

The Honourable Rob Renner, Alberta’s Minister of Environment, plans to be involved in several Waste Reduction Week events, saying "Reducing the waste we produce at home and at work goes a long way to help us clean up the environment. In Alberta, waste reduction practices need to be year-round and second nature."

Free Business Environmental Assessment

The Recycling Council of Alberta, in partnership with Alberta Environment, invites small and medium-sized businesses to apply to receive a free Business Environmental Efficiency Assessment, valued at up to $5,000. Three Alberta-based businesses will be selected shortly after Waste Reduction Week.

The assessment will identify areas within a company’s current business practices where energy, water consumption and solid waste generation can be reduced and recycling increased. The benefits of waste reduction include cost savings and customer/employee satisfaction.

Applications will be accepted until Friday, October 19th. For complete details, visit the RCA's website at www.recycle.ab.ca/wrw and click on the link to apply.

Communities and Schools

Throughout the province, communities and schools are raising awareness of the importance of waste reduction. Cities and towns are officially proclaiming October 15 to 21, 2007 as Waste Reduction Week in their communities. Schools are active with special waste reduction week initiatives that are part of the curriculum.

For example, a number of Grade 4 classes throughout Alberta have registered to participate in the annual Triple Stars reduction challenge.

All Albertans are encouraged to do their part because the environment is truly Too Good to Waste!
