Upcoming Oil Sands Events

Pembina Institute

I would like to highlight a few very important events that will be taking place in the oil sands realm. The Pembina Institute will be celebrating the end of their "Connecting the Drops" Athabasca River expedition in coordination with a rally organized by the First Nations communities of Fort Chipewyan on August 14th in Fort Chipewyan. The event will highlight the health and environmental concerns they currently hold in their region. All are encouraged to attend, please see the attached poster by George Poitras to obtain more information about this important event. Feel free to contact myself or George for further information on the rally. Speakers at this event will include Dr. O'Connor, Dr. Schindler, Melanie Nakagawa (NRDC), Don VanHout (expedition leader), Dan Woynillowicz (Pembina Institute), as well as Chiefs and Elders from the community.

Please note there will be a press conference in Fort McMurray on August 3rd to highlight the expedition (a two-month 1538 km canoe voyage traversing the entire length of the Athabasca River) and First Nations concerns. If you are interested in attending this press conference, please contact me to let me know that you are coming.

A growing group of interested people (about 25 so far!!) will be joining expedition leader Don VanHout for a flotilla leaving August 4th that will canoe from Fort McMurray to Fort McKay (arriving August 5th). We are trying to get as many boats on the water as possible. Anyone who can partake in the flotilla (keeping in mind that you must be self sufficient) are encouraged to join in support of the Athabasca River. I can also provide further details on this leg of the trip.

We would appreciate your participation to highlight these issues, as well as others currently surrounding the oil sands that you may be interested in bringing to the forefront.

Hope to see you in August!
