Wilderness Lovers to Paint Calgary Tower

Alberta Wilderness Association

News Release: March 15, 2007

Fans of Alberta's wild places are getting ready to paint their passion on the walls of the Calgary Tower this March.

The Alberta Wilderness Association (AWA) is hosting their 5th Annual Mural Competition, kickstarting promotion for this year's Climb & Run for Wilderness, the 16th annual Earth Day event that brought out over 1,000 people last year in support of Alberta's wild lands.

"For several years groups of enthusiastic local artists have been transforming the dreary interior of the Calgary Tower into the largest art gallery in town," says Margaret Main, organizer for the mural competition. "Their original designs express all aspects of wilderness in Alberta and further the goals of AWA in protecting our wild lands."

From families to school groups to local artists, participants will have the opportunity to capture their unique vision of Alberta's wilderness on the walls of the Calgary Tower's 96 stairwell landings. Working with a space approximately 2 metres wide by 2.6 metres long (6' by 8'), these visionaries are creating a wonderful legacy for the City of Calgary while building awareness of our province's wild spaces and the conservation work that goes into protecting them.

These special artworks, normally closed to the public, are viewed only once a year during April's Earth Day Climb & Run for Wilderness, when participants climb past the murals on their way up the Calgary Tower's 802 stairs.

The Mural Competition will be held on Saturday, March 24, 2007 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the Calgary Tower. AWA is expecting their biggest turn out ever this year with 18 teams competing in five categories. Winners will receive Climb & Run for Wilderness Limited Edition fleece wear. All participants will be able to enjoy refreshments courtesy of Tim Hortons.

The murals will be open for the public to see during the Climb & Run for Wilderness event that will be held on April 21, 2007.
