Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative (Y2Y) is a joint Canada-US not-for-profit organization with a mission to  connect and protect wildlife habitat from Yellowstone to Yukon so people and nature can thrive. Y2Y takes a scientific  approach to conservation and is upheld as a global leader in large landscape conservation.  


Y2Y is seeking an Outreach Coordinator Intern to promote the Y2Y vision to a broad community through  presentations, events, outreach opportunities and relationship-building. They will work to amplify the voices, stories  and experiences of those who enjoy the Y2Y region. A key aspect of this role will be to build relationships with  underrepresented and/or BIPOC/new Canadian groups with the goal of better understanding their needs and  experiences. This will include ‘virtual online events and outreach’. It could also include in-person events and  outreach ONLY if allowed under national, provincial and local guidelines related to COVID-19. Finally, this position  will play a supportive role to the Development Team in their efforts to raise revenue to support Y2Y conservation  programs. The intern will gain valuable practical and career-related experience working within a highly professional  non-profit environmental organization.  


The Yellowstone to Yukon region stretches some 3,200 kilometres from Yellowstone National Park to Canada’s Yukon.  Our vision is an interconnected system of wild lands and waters from Yellowstone to Yukon, harmonizing the needs  of people with those of nature. Campaigns are currently running in Montana, Idaho, British Columbia and Alberta, so  a broad knowledge of these areas and some of the challenges they face environmentally is useful.  


The Y2Y Outreach Coordinator Intern will report to Y2Y’s Donor Relations Coordinator at the Y2Y office in Canmore, work closely with Y2Y’s Development and Communications Team, and liaise with our Program staff. 

Their principal tasks and responsibilities will be to put their strong communication skills and passion for nature to  good use as they:  

  • Initiate relationships with various communities and organizations who recreate in the Y2Y region;
  • Give Y2Y presentations to select audiences (virtual / in-person if permitted); 
  • Coordinate tabling at various outreach events throughout the summer (if permitted);
  • Prepare/coordinate the creation of print and video communication materials for outreach;
  • Assist the Development Team with fundraising projects and appeals, donor research and outreach;
  • Track and record information on database/systems and other related administration; and Conduct donor communication through phone, email and letter writing. 


  • Working towards or just completed a degree in fields of environmental management or education; public  relations/event management, communications, development or similar;  
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills, and the ability to relay sometimes complex information  engagingly to a lay audience; 
  • Good computer (Word, Excel, PPT) skills and general office experience; 
  • Video editing skills will be considered a bonus; 
  • Ability to work independently and creatively; and 
  • Two references who can attest to your qualifications.  


This position is funded through Canada Summer Jobs, which stipulates that applicants must: 

  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment;  
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under  the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and  
  • Be legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations.

The position will be based out of the Canmore, Alberta office, though we are currently working remotely from home  in a virtual setting.  


Nine weeks of this position is funded by Canada Summer Jobs, and must be completed between June 14, 2021 and  Aug. 13, 2021. The remaining three to seven weeks will be agreed upon during the interview process. The salary is  $18 per hour for a 30-hour work week. Hours and days of work are somewhat flexible.
