Job Tasks and Responsibilities

Y2Y is seeking a Communications Specialist to support communications and outreach within our Alberta-based campaigns. This part-time position is suited to someone interested in using their strong communications skills and passion for wildlife and ecosystem conservation to achieve tangible outcomes.

The Alberta Program Communications Specialist will work directly with members of the Alberta Program team while collaborating with members of the wider Y2Y team and partner groups. The successful candidate will ideally be based in the Bow Valley and either work in Y2Y’s Canmore office or work remotely, pending Covid-19 restrictions and safe work protocols.

Job duties include producing a variety of communications materials, sustaining a strong web presence, liaising with stakeholder groups and other Y2Y partners, and representing Y2Y at public events or via online presentations. The Communications Specialist may also be assigned other duties in line with their skills and experiences and help support other Y2Y staff members, as needed and agreed.

The principal tasks and responsibilities for this position will be:  

  1. Collaborate with the Alberta program team in creating and implementing a strategic communications and engagement plan towards greater protections for Alberta’s Eastern Slopes.
  2. Lead social media content creation in line with the strategic communications and engagement  plan, and assist with general social media engagement for the Alberta program;
  3. Create unique content highlighting Y2Y’s Alberta campaigns through stories, photos, maps,  videos, hand-outs, displays, etc.;  
  4. Provide support for the writing of digital newsletters, media releases, letters, and other written  communications pieces for the Alberta team; 
  5. Plan and execute public outreach opportunities, including in-person or online presentations, in  the Bow Valley and the broader Alberta program region with guidance from the Alberta program  team; 
  6. Research and report on emerging and ongoing conservation issues in Alberta;
  7. Support strategic and programmatic work for the Alberta team as required and in line with the  skills and interests of the Communications Specialist; 

Eligibility & Qualifications  

This position is partly funded through the Canada Summer Jobs program. The Communications Specialist must be between the ages of 15 to 30 years, be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or with refugee  protection, and have a valid Social Insurance Number. You do not need to be a student. International students are not eligible. Necessary qualifications include:  

  • Passion for Y2Y’s mission, nature and conservation;  
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;  
  • Experience in creating and managing social media communications; 
  • An outgoing personality as evidenced by involvement in community organizations or volunteer  events;  
  • Confidence in making presentations and engaging the public;  
  • Ability to work independently and within a team;  
  • Willingness to travel (must have a vehicle and valid drivers’ license);  
  • Access to a computer and internet; 
  • Knowledge of the Alberta portion of the Y2Y region and/or education in ecology, biology,  conservation, environmental education and/or communications; and  
  • Two references who can attest to your qualifications.  

Job Location: The candidate will ideally be based in Canmore, AB, although remote work situations will  be considered and possibly required pending Covid-19 restrictions and safe work protocols.  

Hours of Work and Salary: This is a part-time position for fifteen weeks starting Monday, July 5, 2021  and ending Friday, October 22, 2021. The salary is $18.00 per hour for an 18-hour work week. Weekend  travel and work may be required. Y2Y will reimburse approved out-of-pocket expenses.
