The Book this month is Jane Jacobs. Dark Age Ahead. (2005)

Jacobs argues that we stand on the brink of a new dark age, a period of cultural collapse. She pinpoints five pillars of our culture that are in serious decay: community and family; higher education; the effective practice of science; taxation and government; and the self-regulation of the learned professions. The decline in these five areas is linked to the environmental crisis, racism and the growing gulf between rich and poor. Jacobs suggests how this decay can be stopped and our way of life renewed.

This is a free and lively discussion of important issues facing Calgarians today. The goal is to share books and discussions that help us understand the world and our place in it in a different way. This can change the way we experience the world and the way we act in our day-to-day lives, opening new possibilities for environmental sustainability, social justice and peace.
