The Edmonton Chapter of the Council of Canadians and Pesticide Free Edmonton have been working for years to advocate for the proper use of approved pesticides in Edmonton. However, despite these efforts, Alberta and Edmonton are still lagging behind the rest of the country in pesticide control.
While Edmonton implemented a partial cosmetic pesticide ban in 2015, it included many land exemptions. Now, the city’s Integrated Pest Management approach risks losing any gains Edmonton has made in protecting citizens and the environment from unnecessary toxic chemicals. One consequence, noted by the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment, is that “children in Edmonton are among the least protected in Canada when it comes to unnecessary exposure to pesticides.”

We will learn about Ontario’s pesticide law (the best in the country) from Canadian Environmental Law Association senior researcher Kathleen Cooper. Other speakers include lawyer Mary Lou McDonald, who is pushing back against Canada’s re-registration of glyphosate, and members of Pesticide Free Edmonton.
