Global Warming and You: A Youth Climate Activism Workshop

February 21, 2009 - 6:00pm to 10:00pm is pleased to announce it will be presenting a free half-day introductory workshop on global warming and youth action in Edmonton on February 21, 2009. Global Warming and You: A Youth Climate Activism Workshop will provide local context for the global problem of climate change and will engage participants in a discussion and dialogue about community-based solutions. The workshop is geared towards high school students, but any young person interested in becoming more involved in the fight against global warming is welcome to attend. Details are as follows:

Global Warming and You: A Youth Climate Activism Workshop

What is it?

This workshop is a half-day introduction to the issue of global warming and the important role that youth have in finding a solution. It will begin with a global warming primer that focuses on the local impacts of climate change in Alberta. Next, youth participants will be inspired by guest speakers and stories and examples of successful projects carried out by their peers. The final portion will give participants the skills and confidence to take action in their own schools and communities.

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is geared to young people who interested in their increasing their participation and involvement in their local communities. No experience is necessary. All youth are welcome!

What will participants gain from attending?

Youth participating in the Global Warming and You workshop will increase their knowledge of global warming and its local impacts and will learn about community solutions to this massive problem. Participants will also gain project-planning skills, leadership skills, and the confidence necessary to become a leader in creating positive change in their own communities. In addition, participants will receive a resource booklet including the names of organizations in their community that they could get involved with and have the opportunity to meet other like-minded youth.

How much does it cost?

Nothing! This workshop is free to interested youth participants.

Who is organizing this workshop?

The workshop is organized and sponsored by the Creating Local Connections Program of TakingItGlobal. Creating Local Connections (CLC) Canada is a three-year program that promotes and supports youth participation in Canada. The program's main objectives include raising awareness and providing access to youth opportunities and resources, encouraging collaboration and capacity building among individual youth and youth initiatives.
