Cities & Towns in Transition: 2010 People and Place Conference

June 4, 2010 - 1:45pm to June 5, 2010 - 10:30pm

Registration deadline extended to June 1

This conference is first of its kind in Calgary on sustainability, bringing progressive thought and practical sessions together in an exciting two days. The event combines dialogue, skill building, and path-finding to move us toward sustainable and resilient post-carbon communities.

The conference brings together voices from around the Calgary region to discuss how we transform our cities and towns. Cities and towns around the world are charting a transition to more sustainable communities, economies and lifestyles, and ultimately to exciting new futures. To explore the evolving relationships of people to the places they inhabit, this 2-day conference brings lecturers, workshop leaders and community members together to investigate how we can move toward sustainable and resilient post-carbon communities.

The conference begins with a day of inspiring dialogue and challenging presentations on the themes of Transition Towns, Sustainable Cities (The Portland Model), and Global Perspectives. Highlighted are renowned speakers Jan Inglis, Michael Lewis, and Robert Liberty.

The location then switches from the University setting to the Hillhurst-Sunnyside community. This fun event starts with panel discussions on regional initiatives followed by reflection in small groups. The afternoon features a guided walk through community that no one will want to miss. Participants also can choose from a series of skills workshops, dialogues, and field trips. An evening social event wraps up the conference with dinner and live music!

Location: The conference-workshop starts at the University of Calgary on Friday and moves to Hillhurst-Sunnyside on Saturday.

Registration: ends June 1 at 9am. To register, go to the website. Cost is $90.
