Community Based Social Marketing workshops

May 14 2009 - 3:00pm to May 15 2009 - 11:00pm

Workshop Description

The cornerstone of sustainability is behavior change. If we are to move toward a sustainable future we must encourage individuals and businesses to engage in a multitude of actions (e.g., waste reduction, water and energy efficiency, pollution prevention, etc.). To date, most programs to encourage such activities have relied upon disseminating information. Research demonstrates, however, that simply providing information has little or no effect on what people or businesses do. But if not ads, brochures or booklets, then what? Step It Up Alberta Call to Action!

Feb 10 2009 - 2:00am

Step It Up Alberta is a non-partisan group calling for leadership on environmental issues from the people who can make the most difference: governments, corporations, and institutions.

We want to see real action against climate change:

  • an absolute cap on greenhouse gas emissions,
  • a commitment to significant reductions in the short and long term, &
  • investment in a carbon-conscious economy.

Please join us as we work on the following three campaigns:

  • Green Fingers: documenting citizen support for environmental issues through video and photos
  • We Didn't Wait Until 2020: A write-in campaign to criticize the Alberta government's long timeline for reducing emissions and to ask for investment in alternative energy.
  • Community Leadership: A package of resources to facilitate environmental awareness in community settings, beginning with faith-based groups

The idea is to increase participants' awareness of their spending habits and to think about mass consumerism and its effect on the cultural and natural environment of the world.
