Obed Mine Spill One Year Later: Groups Call for Charges to be Laid, Impacts Disclosed

It has been a year since the Obed Mountain Coal Mine disaster. The mine was owned at the time by Sherritt International but has since been purchased by Westmoreland Coal Company. The breach of a containment pond spilled 670 million litres of toxic tailings into the Athabasca River and its tributaries. Five weeks later this plume of contaminated water had worked its way through the Peace Athabasca Delta and into the North West Territories. Read More

"Water in Focus" Photo Exhibition

The North Saskatchewan Riverkeeper (NSRK) is proud to present the 1st annual "Water in Focus" photo exhibition from 7 to 10 pm on Thursday April 26, 2012. The event will be hosted by NSRK Chairperson and President, Karen Percy Lowe. The Yellowhead Brewery's historic red brick building, located 10229-105 Street, in downtown Edmonton will be transformed into a gallery for an evening of photography, live beats, and local food and beer. The photo contest entry and payment is all online, secure, and confidential.  We want as many people as possible to be involved with celebrating our waters through photography and the dialogue one photo can create about our water. The photo contest will be open until March 31/2012. Read More
