Urgently and Rapidly Increase Alberta’s Green Electric Capacity

A Call to Action from Albertans, Alberta-Based Organizations & Alberta Health Professionals

Alberta is home to remarkable natural beauty—its majestic mountains, expansive plains, pristine rivers, and diverse ecosystems form an environment that supports vibrant communities and wildlife. However, the health of humans and ecosystems across the planet is under severe and escalating threat due to human-induced pollution of air, land, and water. Most notably, greenhouse gas emissions are accelerating climate change, with widespread and harmful consequences for our shared future and future generations.

The impacts of climate change underscore the critical need for immediate and decisive action. Alberta’s power grid is increasingly under strain from population growth, extreme weather events, and rising demand for electricity, including for heating and cooling in a changing climate. Power grid alerts, once rare, have become more frequent. Addressing these challenges requires urgent efforts to modernize and expand Alberta’s green energy capacity.

The rapid advancement of renewable energy technologies—offering lower costs, greater efficiency, and enhanced storage capabilities—presents an unprecedented opportunity for Alberta to transition to a sustainable energy future. By increasing the capacity of Alberta’s electric grid with green energy, we can meet the growing demand for electricity, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and protect public health while fostering innovation and economic growth.

Call to Action

The undersigned organizations and individuals, including Alberta Health Professionals for the Environment (AHPE), urge the Alberta government to take bold steps to ensure the province transitions rapidly and responsibly to a green energy future.

Specifically, we call on the Alberta government to develop and strategic operational plan to:

  1. Provide robust economic incentives to Alberta’s commercial sector for the development, storage, and use of green energy sources.

  2. Support public adoption of green energy by introducing incentives that make sustainable energy solutions accessible and affordable for Albertans.

  3. Position Alberta as a leader in green energy innovation by funding research, development, and implementation through grants and other targeted supports.

Why Action Matters

By prioritizing these actions, Alberta can lead the way in addressing the climate crisis, protect public health, and secure a sustainable, resilient future for generations to come.

Thank you for your attention to this critical matter.
