Members of the Alberta Health Professionals for the Environment Working Group are drawn from a diverse range of organizations within the health and related sectors. These organizations represent nursing, pharmacy, medicine, public health, health-related charities, public educators, and allied health professions and workers. Comprised of dedicated health and healthcare professionals, academics, and subject matter experts, AHPE brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this much needed space.

Norm Campbell BHSc, MD, DSc (hon), FRCPC, CM -
Chair, Alberta Health Professionals for the Environment
Dr. Campbell is a Professor Emeritus of Medicine, Community Health Sciences and Physiology and Pharmacology and a member of the Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta and O’Brien Institute of Public Health at the University of Calgary. Dr. Campbells main interests include prevention and control of hypertension and protecting our environment. Dr. Campbell is a Board member of the Alberta Environmental Network and founder and Co-Chair of the Alberta Health Professionals for the Environment Working Group of the Alberta Environmental Network.
Trudy Huyghebaert PharmD, BSc Pharm, CDE, ACPR -
Mitigation Co-Lead, Canadian Association of Pharmacy for the Environment (CAPhE)
Dr. Trudy Huyghebaert is a clinical pharmacist for the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Calgary/Alberta Health Services. She has an active clinical practice and is involved with medical resident education, quality improvement projects as well as precepts PharmD students for the University of Alberta and University of Toronto. She is currently the mitigation co-chair with the Canadian Association of Pharmacy for the Environment (CAPhE) and a member of the sustainable prescribing working group with Canadian Coalition for Green Health Care.
Trudy received her Doctor of Pharmacy from Idaho State University and her Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the University of Alberta. She also completed her hospital residency at the Ottawa Hospital. Trudy has practiced in community, hospital, and primary care settings throughout her career. Her clinical and research areas of interest include application of evidence-based medicine, sustainable healthcare, and chronic disease management in primary care (with a special interest in diabetes and chronic pain). Her projects include the development of a primary care evidence-based medicine website, multidisciplinary clinic-based patient education sessions, and sustainable healthcare and the role of the primary care pharmacist.
Currently, CAPhE is encouraging best practices in climate mitigation relevant to medication use.
Jennifer Michaud -
Acting Director, Health Policy & Systems (Alberta and NWT) - Heart and Stroke Foundation
Jennifer has been with Heart & Stroke on the Alberta & NWT Mission team since 2019. She works closely with other health charities, health systems leaders, elected officials and people with lived experience to advocate for healthy public policy, support research and public awareness initiatives, enhance rehabilitation and recovery outcomes, and reduce health inequities.
For more than 70 years, Heart & Stroke has been at the forefront of tackling the most pressing issues related to heart disease, stroke and vascular cognitive impairment. We drive life-saving medical breakthroughs and act as a catalyst to bring together the brightest minds to improve diagnosis, care and support. Our vision is: Life. Stephen Wilton MD -
Alberta Regional Committee Chair, Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE)
Dr. Wilton is a Cardiologist and Clinician Scientist at the University of Calgary and has training and expertise in clinical epidemiology, clinical trials, and health services research. Stephen is deeply concerned about the impacts of climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental degradation on the health of people everywhere, including Alberta, and committed to advocating for evidence-based mitigation and adaptation strategies that will minimize these harms.
CAPE is a national organization of physicians and other health care professionals that has been active in environmental advocacy in Canada for 30 years. CAPE has led successful campaigns targeting each area of the triple planetary crisis. The CAPE Alberta Regional Committee supports CAPE National objectives as well as advocating on Alberta-specific issues at the intersection of planetary and human health.
Douglas Tuck -
Board Treasurer, Alberta College of Family Physicians (ACFP)
Dr. Douglas Tuck is a family physician who attended Medical School at Dalhousie (‘11), Halifax NS, and Residency at U of A (‘13). Dr. Tuck has been living and practising in Alberta ever since. Concurrently serving in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) until July of 2019, Dr. Tuck practised in both the federal and provincial health care systems, allowing the opportunity to be deployed and practise in the United States (RIMPAC), Jordan (Syrian Refuges), and Ukraine. Douglas also served as the Senior Medical Authority in a multidisciplinary facility for 18 months prior to his retirement from the CAF. During this time, he assisted in the development of Quality Assurance initiatives and the adaptation of a care delivery systems. Giving back to the community has always been a priority for Dr. Tuck. There has rarely been a period in his life where he has not volunteered in some capacity. He has served as a coach, student politician, and as a board member at both Mount Allison University and the Alberta College of Family Physicians (ACFP) while a resident at University of Alberta. He firmly believes one should endeavour to work to improve the lot of those who follow behind us.
The Alberta College of Family Physicians (ACFP) wishes to partner with the AEN to create environmentally conscious resources for ACFP members and their health teams on an emerging area of global health. The ACFP will provide in-kind support by assisting with the promotion of the AEN and AHPE's messaging through it's tools of newsletters, websites, social media, and ACFP Networks.
Nikita McEwan BA -
Manager of CPD Programs & Events, Alberta College of Family Physicians (ACFP)
Nikita is the Manager of Programs and Events at the ACFP and has been with the college since the beginning of 2019. You may know her from programs such as the Family Medicine Summit conference, ACFP webinars, Cert+, or research programs. She has volunteer for over 4 years with a national conservation-based program that aims to educate local youth on sustainability, conservation, and environmentally informed practices.
Sonja Wicklum MD -
Clinical Associate Professor and Family Medicine Clerkship Director, University of Calgary
Dr. Sonja Wicklum practices at the Central Family Medicine Teaching Clinic in downtown Calgary. Her research focuses on planetary health, and obesity prevention and management in primary care and specific to Indigenous populations. She has co-authored the prevention chapter of the new Canadian Adult Obesity Clinical Practice Guidelines, a policy brief to Alberta Health on climate change resiliency, and a scoping review on greening family medicine. She is the North American Co-chair of the WONCA Planetary Health Working Group and the University of Calgary representative to the AFMC Planetary Health Committee.
The University of Calgary Cumming School of Medicine is incorporating Planetary Health into medical training. The Department of Family Medicine has launched a greening process, addressing patient education, and lowering the environmental impact of clinical operations and care.
Lindsay McLaren BA (hons), MA, PhD -
Associate Professor at the Department of Community Health Sciences and the O’Brien Institute for Public Health, University of Calgary
Lindsay McLaren is a Professor in the Department of Community Health Sciences at the University of Calgary. She represents the Alberta Public Health Association as part of the AHPE. She has focused her career on quantitative research, specifically in the area of structural forces that influence health equity.
Maya Kalogirou -
President, Canadian Association of Nurses for the Environment (National)
Dr. Kalogirou was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. She is a Registered Nurse with a clinical background in emergency room nursing and is a doctoral graduate from the University of Alberta. Her program of research relates to the intersection between climate change and health, as well as decarbonization of health care. Maya is the current President for the Canadian Association of Nurses for the Environment, a nursing group that is a member of the Canadian Network of Nursing Specialties of the Canadian Nurses Association/L’Association Canadienne des Infirmiers et Infirmières pour l’Environment. She is currently a Post Doctoral Fellow with UBC.
CANE - ACIIE (Canadian Association of Nurses for the Environment - Association canadienne des infirmières et infirmiers pour l'environnement) represents nurses dedicated to the improvement of planetary health across all domains of nursing practice, policy, research and education. CANE's mission is to promote planetary health among nurses and people in Canada and globally. We achieve this by engaging with advocacy, education, research, practice, and policy at all levels of nursing and society.
Danielle Kody -
Alberta Co-Representative, Canadian Association of Nurses for the Environment (Alberta)
Despite being in the profession for less than 10 years, Dani has worked as a Registered Nurse (RN) in a variety of settings to serve many rural and urban communities across Alberta. With a special interest in trauma nursing, she spent a large majority of her career in emergency departments and a Level 1 general systems intensive care unit. Due to her passion for nursing and learning, she is currently completing further graduate education to obtain her Masters in Nursing (MN) with a focus on leadership and planetary health.

Alberta Co-Representative, Canadian Association of Nurses for the Environment (Alberta)
Growing up in a farming community in Central Alberta, I saw firsthand the link between the earth's health and our own. From the health of the soil to spending time hoping for rain to fall, I learned to care about our planet. Professionally, I have over 14 years of experience as a public health nurse with a background in comprehensive school health, immunization services and outbreak management. Recently, I graduated with a Master's in Public Health from the University of Waterloo.
Maya Schimert -
Executive Member, University of Calgary Environmental Health Interest Group
Maya is a first-year Medical Student at the Cumming School of Medicine with an interest in Planetary Health. Maya is currently acting as the Climate Change Officer with the Calgary Medical Student Association.
The Environmental Health Interest Group (EHIG) is made up of medical students at the University of Calgary interested in planetary health and climate change education. We are currently working on several projects at our school to reduce waste, including switching anatomy aprons from disposable to reusable, implementing zero waste policies among clubs and interest groups, and running various campaigns encouraging environmentally friendly behaviour.
Terri Shaul -
Operations Director, Alberta Association of Nurses
Terri is a Registered Nurse with 30+ years of nursing experience working in a variety of settings across rural Alberta. Terri has a passion for supporting community, personal growth and development. Terri has sat on many health care committees supporting the advancement of community programs, primary care, research initiatives, and both youth and senior networks. His role with the Alberta Association of Nurses contributes to the support, advocacy, and professional development opportunities provided for nurses across Alberta.
The Alberta Association of Nurses (AAN) is collaborating with AHPE to create awareness among Alberta nursing professionals regarding environmentally conscious resources for health care professionals and facilities. The AAN will provide in-kind support by aiding in the promotion of messaging through its newsletter, website, social media, and other stakeholder organizations.
Kathryn Melrose BA, MA -
Executive Director, Alberta Council for Environmental Education
Kathryn has over two decades of formal teaching and non-profit leadership experience supporting educators and Calgary educational districts. Equipped with a B.A. and M.A. in Education, Kathryn is passionate about ensuring the advancement of high-quality environmental and sustainability education throughout the province.
Founded in 2005, Alberta Council for Environmental Education (ACEE) has become a trusted resource for advancing environmental literacy and stewardship across the province. Our collaborative approach engages educators, partners, and communities to drive systems change and support the next generation of environmental stewards. ACEE is currently undertaking a Call to Action for a comprehensive evidence-based school curriculum on the environment and planetary health.
Dixie Taylor BA, MA -
Director of Programs, Alberta Council for Environmental Education
Equipped with a B.A. and M.A. in Community Development, Dixie has extensive experience delivering, designing, and managing various youth programs. Her leadership experience includes supporting small to large multigenerational teams and leading successful partnerships with school districts and community partners.
Natalie Odd -
Executive Director, Alberta Environmental Network
Natalie Odd (she/her) is the Executive Director of the Alberta Environmental Network (AEN) and has worked in the environmental nonprofit sector in Alberta for over 20 years. AEN has a membership of more than 50 environmental groups that connect, collaborate, mobilize and impact ecosystems. Over the past two years, Natalie has worked to partner AEN with other organizations for the Defend Alberta Parks (CPAWS Northern & Southern Alberta) and Protect our Water - Alberta Beyond Coal (Council of Canadians - Prairies-NWT Region) ground campaigns. Natalie is also working collaboratively to build Drawdown Alberta - a crowd-sourcing, climate-solutions movement that has also emerged in BC and Ontario - and to advance a Just Transition in Alberta. Natalie has run in four federal elections, advocating for environmental and social justice. She was born in Holland and has lived in England, France, Sweden and Ecuador.
Preet Kang -
Program Manager, Alberta Environmental Network
Preet Kang (she/her) is truly passionate about renewable energy and climate action. Preet’s formal education in chemical engineering has led to the understanding that the way energy is produced has a lasting effect on our world. She believes satisfying the increasing energy demand while maintaining sustainability and social equity is a huge and complex issue in our communities. As a youth, she is curious about this challenge and eager to delve into opportunities that support climate policy and action. Preet is currently the Program Manager at the Alberta Environmental Network, working to advance a Just Transition in Alberta as the province moves to a low-carbon economy.
