Support our call for a federal regional assessment of all metallurgical coal mining activity

From the NWP website:

On February 11, 2021, Niitsitapi Water Protectors launched a federal petition addressed to the Minister of Environment and Climate Canada, the Hon. Jonathan Wilkinson, requesting a regional assessment of all coal exploration and development in southwest Alberta and the cumulative impacts on areas of federal jurisdiction including Treaty and Aboriginal rights, species at risk, climate and fish and fish habitat. The sheer number of coal exploration programs and project proposals and lack of Indigenous consultation and public engagement in the ongoing coal farce is unacceptable.

Our petition garnered 18,333 signatures from across Canada and was presented to the House of Commons on March 22, 2021. Minister Wilkinson then submitted the petition as a formal request for a regional assessment to the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada (IAAC).

Great! But……. the work doesn’t end there. This is where YOU come in.

Pending a report and recommendations from the IAAC, the Minister still must decide whether a regional assessment on coal mining should take place. This is where you come in! Over the next couple of weeks it is critical to urge Minister Wilkinson to honour the calls of the 18,333 petition supporters and order a regional assessment.
