The Alberta Environmental Network (AEN) connects Albertans and environmental groups that are dedicated to preserving and protecting Alberta’s environment. As a non-profit and non-partisan organization, the AEN supports collaboration of the environmental community throughout the province.

We are a network of individuals and groups working together on shared concerns. AEN members include individuals and representatives from member groups that connect, collaborate and share information.

The AEN is a link between the environmental community and government, industry, the media and all Albertans.

Join the network

Albertans and environmental groups are welcome to join the AEN as members – there are memberships for both individuals and groups. Members contribute to preserving and protecting Alberta’s environment by sharing information and collaborating on shared issues. Learn more about becoming a member of the AEN.

AWA Letter on Bow Basin Water Management Options

Alberta Environment and Parks has been gathering input on Bow Basin Water Management Options. The Alberta Wilderness Association has published its response on their website. From their letter:

AWA believes that the primary strategy for flood mitigation for Calgary and surrounding communities should not be on-stream dam infrastructure, but rather upstream land use improvements, and strictly limiting the future establishment of commercial, industrial, residential developments within the floodplain of the Bow River. This project has gained considerable momentum without adequate scrutiny of environmental impacts or of alternatives to on-stream dams. AWA strongly believes that all three options must be vetted thoroughly for potential negative ecological effects. While we support none of the projects, we believe that the Ghost dam option is potentially the least harmful. Read More

In December 2017, the Government of Alberta and the Government of Canada signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that renewed each Government’s commitment to monitoring environmental impacts of oil sands development through the Oil Sands Monitoring Program (OSMP). The MOU established the mutual intentions of both governments to continue to collaborate and be accountable for the design and implementation of an integrated monitoring, evaluation and reporting system. It also confirmed the joint commitment to revise and establish, in cooperation with Indigenous Communities in the oil sands region, effective mechanisms for Indigenous participation in the design, implementation and governance of the monitoring system. This includes development of a comprehensive, ongoing agreement (the Operational Framework Agreement, finalized September 21, 2018) that defines the governance and implementation model to guide the decision-making structure and processes, roles and responsibilities, and the monitoring, research mandate, and objectives of the OSMP. The Alberta Water Council (AWC) has been tasked with tracking implementation of the Alberta Water for Life strategy, a province-wide approach to the protection of watersheds in Alberta. Where does your local candidate stand on the environment?

100 Debates on the Environment

As both the Federal Election race and the climate heat up, it is crucially important to find out where the parties, and where your local candidates stand on the environment. Across the country, local organizers are holding non-partisan, all-candidates forums focusing on environmental issues on or around October 3.  The national 100 Debates on the Environment initiative is being co-ordinated by GreenPAC, with support from Équiterre in Quebec.

Truth & Reconciliation at AEN

Learn more about our process and progress, and share your thoughts with us, on our Decolonization and Indigenization page.

It is our understanding at the Alberta Environmental Network that Reconciliation starts with the land, and there is no Reconciliation until we have faced the Truth. While Truth is held collectively, we recognize everyone is on their own learning journey, at their own pace. Our work at AEN focuses on the lands outlined by the Province of Alberta, lands with which we are learning to be in kinship relationship, in the nêhiyaw (Cree) spirit of treaty-making. The lands we work for are described in Treaties 4, 6, 7, 8, and 10. The traditional keepers of this land are Anishinabe, Nêhiyawak (Cree), Dené, Dane-zaa, Nakota, Îyârhe Nakoda (Stoney Nakoda), Tsuut’ina, and Siksikaitsitapi (Blackfoot Confederacy); this land is also the homeland of the Métis. We are committed to building meaningful reciprocal relationships, to be of service particularly to those directly experiencing the effects of oppression, genocide, and exploitation.
