Business as Usual as ERCB OKs Kananaskis Sour Gas Pipeline

A twenty-month-long hearing process held by the Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB) into a major new sour gas development proposal in Kananaskis Country resulted in little more than a rubber stamp, and business as usual. ERCB’s June 6 Decision 2010-022 gives the go-ahead for Petro Canada (now Suncor) to drill 11 new sour gas wells, and build a 37-kilometer pipeline through land recently recognized by the Alberta government as Nationally Significant. Approval comes despite considerable opposition to the proposal from local landowners, environmentalists and First Nations. Read More

Gulf Oil Spill: AEN Groups Weigh In

With the BP disaster in the Gulf of Mexico dominating the environmental news, AEN member groups are weighing in on the spill and the potential implications on Canada and Alberta.

The Pembina Institute's Karen Campbell posts an op-ed on the implications of the spill on Enbridge's proposed Northern Gateway pipeline. This pipeline is proposed to run from Edmonton to a new tanker terminal in Kitimat, B.C.; and will help bring the products of Alberta's oilsands industry to new markets.

Meanwhile, Sierra Club Canada has called for a moratorium on offshore oil drilling  in Canada.

The oil spill in the Gulf is a catastrophe,” said John Bennett, Executive Director of Sierra Club Canada.  “Canada should fully understand the causes of the explosion in the Gulf and the failure of the clean up before allowing any more drilling in Canadian waters. In the meantime a moratorium should be put in place.

Greenpeace Canada urges Canadians to email the Prime Minister and tell him:

…the threat of such a catastrophy [sic] in our waters is unacceptable. We must cut our addiction to oil and support renewable energy

Greening the Mackenzie Gas Pipeline: Is the National Energy Board serious about sustainability?

YELLOWKNIFE — The National Energy Board has an opportunity to get serious about sustainability of ecosystems and communities in the Mackenzie Valley as it considers a possible licence for the Mackenzie Gas Project in hearings this week, says Sierra Club Prairie.

“We are disappointed that sustainability considerations are absent in the NEB’s proposed licence conditions for the Mackenzie Gas Project, despite that fact that the NEB’s chair has recently stated that sustainability is a focus for the Board.” said Sheila Muxlow, acting director of Sierra Club Prairie. “The NEB cannot be said to be serious about advancing sustainability or the public interest if it turns a blind eye to the fact that the Mackenzie Gas Project is a basin-opening project that will create a petro-economy throughout much of the Mackenzie Valley.” Read More
