The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency) must decide whether a federal environmental assessment is required for the proposed Lamont Railcar Storage Project, located northwest of Lamont, Alberta.

To assist in making its decision, the Agency is seeking comments from the public on the project and its potential effects on the environment. All comments received will be considered public.

As a next step, the Agency will post a decision on its website stating whether an environmental assessment is required. If one is required, the public will have three more opportunities to comment on the project.

The Proposed Project

Alberta Midland Rail Terminal Ltd. proposes to construct, operate and decommission a new railcar storage facility, located approximately three kilometres northwest of Lamont, Alberta. As proposed, the Lamont Railcar Storage Project would consist of 21 rail tracks - 16 for the storage of railcars, and 5 for operational use. The project would have a total track length of 21.6 kilometres and allow the proponent to store and switch up to 850 railcars at any given time. Once constructed, the facility would also be operated and maintained by Canadian Northern Plains Rail Services Ltd. Alberta Midland Rail Terminal Ltd. would remain the owner of the facility.
