A short Government of Alberta news release, October 19, 2011, announced: “Government cancelled the RFP after people expressed concerns that there was no public input into using a Request for Proposals and that there might be an impact on water and on the ranching community.” Read More

Notification of Funding Opportunity: ACA Grant Eligible Conservation Fund

ACA is proud to enter into its 15th year of Conservation Funding. The Grant Eligible Conservation Fund has two parts: Part A: Conservation Support and Enhancement and Part B: Research.

A total amount of $500,000 will be available for project funding via the GECF Part A: Conservation Support and Enhancement, and a total of $350,000 will be available for project funding via the GECF Part B: Research during the 2012-2013 funding cycle. Read More

Pembina reacts to new report from federal environment commissioner

OTTAWA — Matt Horne, director of the Pembina Institute's climate change program, made the following statement concerning Chapter 1, "Climate Change Plans under the Kyoto Protocol Implementation Act," of the 2011 October report by the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development:  

"The federal government has repeatedly exaggerated the effectiveness of its policies to limit greenhouse gas pollution, and now admits its plan will be 90 per cent less effective than it first claimed. Further, the government has ignored the legal requirement to explain how it will make up for this gap.

AWA Welcomes Premier-Designate Redford’s Promise to Protect Alberta’s Endangered Wildlife

Alberta Premier-designate Alison Redford committed during her campaign to suspend the public land sale known as “Potatogate” that would see 16,000 acres of native prairie converted to intensive irrigated agricultural use. Potatogate lands are known to provide crucial habitat for numerous species at risk, including burrowing owl, ferruginous hawk and long-billed curlew. “Albertans deserve to know that the species that call this province home today will still be here for generations to come,” Redford wrote in a September 12, 2011 statement. Alberta court to decide if it will hear Maxim coal plant challenge

CALGARY — Tomorrow, an Alberta court will hear an Ecojustice application to appeal Maxim Power Corp.’s controversial Milner coal plant expansion.

The groups seek to overturn the Alberta Utilities Commission’s (AUC) hasty approval of the Milner project, which allows Maxim to avoid incoming federal greenhouse gas regulations.

Ecojustice, on behalf the Pembina Institute, will appear before the Court of Appeal of Alberta tomorrow. The hearing will determine if the appeal can proceed or not. Read More

Replace spin with conservation action in international Crown of Continent say conservation groups

Pincher Creek & Calgary: Sierra Club Canada and the Castle-Crown Wilderness Coalition are maintaining that while it is important to have the Alberta Sustainable Resource Development’s Parliamentary Assistant, Evan Berger, representing the government today at the international Crown of the Continent Round Table in Polson, Montana, the province needs to replace its spin with actual conservation action, instead of the actions thwarting conservation in Alberta’s portion of the Crown of the Continent Ecosystem.  Read More

Conservation groups: Canada’s tar sands extraction violates international wildlife treaties
